President's Report / Secretary's Report
At the end of 2006 I can reflect on a year with positive outcomes.
As expected, our non affiliation did not affect us at all, on the contrary, it allowed us to concentrate on our own affairs.
As you may have noticed we had a few near players this season, introduced by you the players, through you, re own network of friends, family, etc. This is a good way of recruitment, so thanks, and keep spreading the word.
Maurice's junior group also had a small increase this year.
A shared spring competition with
Brighton TTC is being trialled at the moment, and may lead to other things.
More details will be in the Secretary's Report.
All committee members at all levels, keep on performing at a level that gives one confidence for the future of STTA. I thank all committee members, and all the other volunteers who contributed in a variety of ways.
Hope to see you all in 2007.
In the early part of the 2005/2006 operational period, the Executive was busy preparing its defence in respect of the ongoing registration fees dispute with TTSA. A court hearing was scheduled for early January 2006. The outcome of this will be discussed later in this report.
Following the court deliberation on this matter, the Executive was able to concentrate on local operational matters. While the remainder of the operational period seemed quiet in nature, it did consist of a few positive innovations and outcomes.
On reflection the following deserve mention:-
Maintaining communication with Members - quarterly newsletters, emails to members, an informative and up to date web site, competition results in the Messenger, winter and competition programs provided to all players, flyers on tables down the centre aisle of the stadium, leaflets handed out to school students following coaching and the always available STTA general handout ........ all represent ongoing forms of communication with the membership, the local community and ever overseas interests groups. Well done to all those who contribute to the communication process.
Active After School Program - Following on from the program commenced in 2005, both Rex Rayner and Alvan White have delivered numerous further programs in 2006. In addition to delivering programs in the Southern area, their services have also been utilised to deliver programs elsewhere around the State.
World Community Grid - Southern has joined the World Community Grid as a partner. In simple terms, through the installation of a small piece of software (provided free), your personal computers idle processing power can be utilised in a discrete way to help address world health issues. Your computer is sent a small task to process utilising system idle time, returning the results back to the grid for colation with results from many other computers. The idle time of your computer can be used for a worthy cause. For more information, go to the following website www.worldcommunitygrid.com and join the Southern TTA team.
An Innovative Spring 2006 Competition - The 2006 Spring Competition consists of 4 divisions and a total of 84 players. Participation numbers are higher than the last few years due to the joint venture approach adopted by Southern in inviting Brighton TTC to enter teams in the competition. During each Wednesday night of the 10 weeks season, the Brighton TTC hosts one divisions round of matches. Player feedback has been positive from both Southern and Brighton players.
STTA/TTSA Registration Fee Dispute
- In my report last year, I outlined the background of a financial dispute
with TTSA where they sought $3,600 in respect to an estimate of unregistered
STTA players in 2004. I further advised attempts to resolve the issue
had failed and the matter was set down for hearing in early January 2006.
The matter was heard and settled in the Magristrates Court on 10 January
2006, the outcome being without admitting liability and in good faith, in
full and final settlement, STTA consented to paying TTSA an amount of
$2,800.
TTSA did not approach STTA in 2006 re affiliation and registration, nor did the Southern Executive seek affiliation on behalf of the membership. Required officials were registered through the Brighton Table Tennis Club.
Once again I wish to recognise and say a big thank you to all those long standing volunteers who play their part in making the Southern Table Tennis Association a great sporting and social organisation.
